Chapter Seventeen

I stood outside the Savannah Safari, face paint freshly removed, with butterflies in my stomach. Ryan was picking me up. It was supposed to be our first real evening date since he got back.

The night air was deliciously cool, and I felt like I could spend the whole evening outside. But that wasn’t going to happen, thanks to Brad.

I was nervous about seeing Ryan. Not because of our relationship, but because of what I was about to ask him to do. I was pretty sure it wasn’t what he had in mind for our evening.

He pulled up in an unmarked police vehicle. I got in the passenger seat and stuffed my bag into the footwell.

“Hey.” He grinned at me, but it looked strange under the dim interior light of the car. “The night is our oyster. What do you want to do?”

“Umm…”

“There is something, isn’t there? Come on, spit it out. Is it cupcakes? I’m down with cupcakes.”

“Cupcakes could make an appearance later,” I conceded. “But before that, how, umm, how would you feel about going to intimidate someone?”

Ryan gave me a funny look, trying to figure out if I was serious or not.

“I was thinking dinner, maybe a late-night movie. But you want to… intimidate someone?”

“Yeah.”

“Anyone in particular, or is this just a new thing you’re doing?”

I punched him in the arm, and we both laughed.

“Someone in particular.”

“I take it this is something to do with your case. Or did you turn into a bully while I was away?” Ryan tried to sound playful, but there was also a tenseness. He wasn’t exactly delighted that our romantic date was turning into work.

“I’m only a part-time bully. I’m sorry Ryan, but this… this thing just came up, and I’ve got to deal with it. You understand, right? This case just keeps getting bigger. And I don’t have a whole department to back me up. Just Ian.”

“And me.”

“Yeah. And you. So, is it okay?”

“It’s not exactly how I thought the night might go. But it never is with you, is it?” He poked me in the arm and I giggled. “But hey, if you want to go and intimidate someone, then that’s what we’ll do. Whatever your desire, I’m here to fulfill it.”

“Very funny.”

I told Ryan where to take us and then pulled out my phone to call up Jack, the owner of the Tremonte.

There was no more time for small talk.
